Barndoor Wiking

Barndoor Wiking

I’ve been adding to my collection of VW Bus toys lately. This is now the crown jewel of the collection. It’s made by a company called Wiking and is from the 1950s. This would have been found at dealerships to keep the kids busy, but also to demonstrate the functionality of the various bus models.

The clear top of this model comes off and reveals seven happy passengers, plus a doggie and some luggage! Everything is removable (except the dog, he might bite, leave him alone) and can be repositioned as needed. The rear “barndoor” engine lid opens up to reveal a nicely detailed motor and spare tire.

Although these buses are slightly stylized, they still have amazing detail. I’m very glad I finally found one of these. The previous owner says that he has a bunch more in boxes, and when he retires next year he may dig them out. I’ll keep in touch, just to stay on his mind!
