Why do I drive a VW?

vw_parkingAt work the other day one of my friends asked me “why do you drive old VWs?” It actually got me thinking…why DO I? I guess I don’t have just one simple answer, but here are some things that come to mind.It started off financially. My first car, a 1972 Bug was all we could afford. And to this day that’s certainly a part of it. When you buy a new car and drive it off the lot it drops in value immediately. All of my cars have kept their value and most have gone up! When I was looking for a new commuter car I thought for a moment about buying a newer car. But then, I realized that for the same amount I could buy a really nice Type 34 Ghia and have something unique.

And uniqueness enters into it as well. What can I say? It’s fun when people give me a thumbs-up, or flash a peace sign when I’m driving down the freeway. I often come out of the market and find a note on my windshield asking if it’s for sale.

But certainly one of the great benefits is the parking lot. have you ever lost your car in a parking lot? I haven’t! :)
